আছেন। আমিও আল্লাহর রহমতে ভালো আছি। গত ব্লগে ইংরেজি ব্যাকরণের ‘Comparison of Adjectives বা Degrees of Adjectives’ নিয়ে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করেছি। আজকে এই ব্লগে
Comparison of Adjectives আরও কিছু সাধারণ ব্যবহার নিয়ে উদাহরণসহ বিস্তারিত বর্ণনা
করবো। তবে এই ব্লগটি দেখার পূর্বে Comparison of Adjectives সম্পর্কে মৌলিক ধারণা রাখা
জরুরি। তাহলে শুরু করা যাক।

⇘ দুইয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Comparative এবং
দুইয়ের অধিকের মধ্যে তুলনা বুঝাতে Superlative ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
She is the more beautiful of the two
girls.
নোটঃ Comparative এর আগে the বসে না, কিন্তু
Two উল্লেখ থাকলে তার আগে the ব্যবহৃত হয়।
⇘ একই শ্রেণীর একটি প্রাণী বা বস্তুর সাথে অনেক
প্রাণী বা বস্তুর সাথে তুলনা বুঝালে Comparative এর পরে than এবং তার পরে any
other বা all other বসে। যেমন –
Maha is nicer than any other girl in
the class.
Chittagong is bigger than all other sea-ports in Bangladesh.
⇘ একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর দুটি গুণের মধ্যে তুলনা
করার সময় Positive এর শেষে er যুক্ত না করে উক্ত Positive এর পূর্বে more/less বসিয়ে
Comparative করতে হয়। যেমন –
Maha is more nice than smart.
The man is less pious than wise.
⇘ ইংরেজিতে ১২ টি Latin Adjective রয়েছে। যেমন – Interior, exterior, ulterior, major, minor (এই পাঁচটি শব্দ Positive adjective এর মতো ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং Comparative adjective এর মতো ব্যবহৃত হয় না।) এবং Inferior, superior, prior, anterior, posterior, senior, junior এই সাতটি Adjective সব সময় Comparative এ ব্যবহৃত হয় এবং এদের পরে than না বসে to বসে। যেমন –
The interior part of the building is fine.
The exterior part of the building is bad.
I have an ulterior motive to help you.
Major the people of Bangladesh are not rich.
Shanzida is a minor girl.
My shirt is inferior to yours.
He is superior to me in rank.
You are junior to me in age.
He is posterior to me.
⇘ Comparative degree এর পরে than বসলেও
else ও other এর পরে যথাক্রমে than/but ও than বসে। যেমন –
He is none other than my father.
Shanzida is none else than Maha.
Or, Shanzida is none else but Maha.
⇘ Positive degree এর পূর্বে Very এবং Comparative
degree এর পূর্বে much বসে। যেমন –
He is very happy to see you.
I am much better today.
⇘ দুটি সমান ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনার
অর্থে Affirmative sentence এ as……….as এবং Negative sentence এ not so……………as অথবা
not as ……… as দ্বারা প্রকাশ করা হয়। যেমন –
An apple is usually as big as an
orange.
Maha is not so / as strong as Shanzida.
Than এর পরে Pronoun এর Nominative case বসে।
যেমন –
Habib is shorter than me I (এখানে me না হয়ে I হবে).
⇘ Former, latter, elder, upper, inner,
outer, utter ইত্যাদি Comparative degree গুলো Comparative এর পরিবর্তে Positive এ
ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
The former Headmaster was very strict.
He is my elder brother.
⇘ তুলনার সময় দুইটি Noun এর প্রথমটি
Possessive case হলে দ্বিতীয়টিও Possessive case হয়। যেমন –
Maha’s house is better than Habib’s
The character of Maha is better than
that of Sumaiya.
⇘ Double Comparative বা Double
Superlative ইংরেজিতে ব্যবহৃত হয় না। যেমন –
I am comparatively better now (বাক্যটি শুদ্ধ
নয়)
শুদ্ধ বাক্যটি হবে –
I am better now.
Or, I am comparatively well now
Double Comparison Form এর সাধারণ ব্যবহারঃ
⇘ ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু উভয়ের ক্ষেত্রে Older /
oldest ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
Maha is older than Habib.
Ours is the oldest house in this
village.
⇘ শুধু ব্যক্তির ক্ষেত্রে এবং একই পরিবারভুক্ত
ব্যক্তিদের বুঝাতে Elder / eldest ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
He is my elder brother.
Do you know my eldest daughter?
⇘ Later দ্বারা সময় এবং latter দ্বারা ক্রম
বা অবস্থান বুঝায়। যেমন –
He often comes later than Maha.
Spring comes in the latter part of the
year.
⇘ Latest দ্বারা সময় এবং last দ্বারা ক্রম বা
অবস্থান বুঝায়। যেমন –
Have you received the latest news?
Maha came last of all.
⇘ Nearest দ্বারা দূরত্ব এবং next দ্বারা ক্রম
বা অবস্থান বুঝায়। যেমন –
This is the nearest post office from
our college.
The man who lives in the next house is
honest.
⇘ First দ্বারা ক্রম এবং foremost দ্বারা প্রসিদ্ধ
অর্থে ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
Maha
is the first girl in the class.
A.K. Fazlul Huq was the foremost leader
of his time.
⇘ Farther অধিকতর দূরত্ব এবং further আরও অর্থে
ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
Chandpur is farther from Cumilla than
Chittagong.
This order will remain valid until
further orders.
⇘ দুইয়ের মধ্যে বুঝালে former এবং দুইয়ের অধিক
বুঝালে first ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
Habib and Sakib are two brothers, the
former is senior to the latter by three years.
Maha stood first in the examination.
⇘ Outer অবস্থান বুঝাতে এবং utter আধিক্য বুঝাতে
ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন –
He lives in the outer suburbs (শহরতলি).
She is an utter stranger to me.
⇘ Less দ্বারা কোনো কিছুর পরিমাণ এবং fewer
দ্বারা সংখ্যা বুঝানো হয়। যেমন –
He is less strong than I.
No fewer than thirty boys were present
in the class.
