⇘ বিভিন্ন অর্থ বুঝাতে “On” এর ব্যবহারঃ

সময়ঃ He met me on Monday.
অনুসারেঃ I acted on my mother’s advice.
অব্যবহিত পরেঃ On hearing the news of his mother’s death, he went home.
জোরেঃ He was released on the ground of his argument.
উপরেঃ The book is on the table.
সম্বন্ধেঃ He wrote an essay on ‘Global warming’.
কারণেঃ I congratulated him on his success.
নির্ভরশীলতাঃ The cow lives on grass.

 

⇘ নোটঃ

➥ বড় স্থান বা সময়ের পূর্বে ‘in’ এবং ছোট স্থান বা সময়ের পূর্বে ‘at’ বসে। যেমনঃ

I got to the playground at 5:30 in the evening.

He lives at Mawa in Dhaka.

লক্ষণীয়, বাংলায় বড় স্থান বা সময় পূর্বে বসে কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে বড় স্থান বা সময় পরে বসে।

 

➥ কোনো কিছুর ভিতরে অবস্থিত অর্থাৎ স্থিতিশীলতা বুঝাতে ‘in’ এবং ভিতরে প্রবেশ অর্থাৎ গতিশীলতা এবং রূপান্তরিত হয় এমন বুঝাতে ‘into’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

He is in the room.

Water is changed into snow.

 

➥ দিন বা তারিখের পূর্বে ‘on’, মাস বা বছরের পূর্বে ‘in’ এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে ‘at’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

He was born at 5:30 on Friday in April in 1980.

লক্ষণীয়, Morning, evening, noon, afternoon ইত্যাদির পূর্বে ‘in’ বসলে এদের পূর্বে ‘the’ বসে কিন্তু ‘at’ বসলে এদের পূর্বে ‘the’ বসে না। যেমনঃ

He begins his work in the morning.

He comes back home at evening.

 

➥ অতীতকালে ব্যাপক সময় বুঝাতে ‘after’ এবং ভবিষ্যৎকালে ব্যাপক সময় বুঝাতে ‘in’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

He returned home after a week.

He will come in a week.

 

➥ ভবিষ্যৎকালে ব্যাপক সময়ের শেষ মুহূর্ত বুঝাতে ‘in’ এবং সে সময় উত্তীর্ণ হওয়ার পূর্বে বুঝাতে ‘within’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

He will come in a month (এক মাসের শেষ মুহূর্তে)

He will come within a month (এক মাস উত্তীর্ণ হওয়ার পূর্বে)

 

➥ ব্যাপক সময় এর পূর্বে ‘for’ এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময় এর পূর্বে ‘since’ বসে এবং এদের পূর্ববর্তী Verb এর Perfect Tense হয়। যেমনঃ

He has been absent for four days since Friday last.

 

➥ ভবিষ্যৎ ব্যাপক সময়ের পূর্বে ‘in’ এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বে ‘by বা before’ বসে। যেমনঃ

He will come in a week.

They will come by or before 5 o’clock.

 

➥ যে কাজ সম্পাদন করে তার পূর্বে ‘by’ এবং যে বা যার সাহায্যে কাজ সম্পাদিত হয় তার পূর্বে ‘with’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

The snake was killed by Habib with a stick.

 

➥ দুইয়ের মধ্যে বুঝাতে ‘between’ এবং দুইয়ের অধিকের মধ্যে বুঝাতে ‘among’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

He divided the mangoes between Habib and Sakib.

The teacher distributed the fruits among the boys.

 

➥ পাশে অর্থে ‘beside’ এবং “এ ছাড়াও / অধিকিন্তু” অর্থে ‘besides’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

He sat beside me.

Besides this pen I have another one.

 

➥ সীমার ভিতরে বুঝালে ‘in’, সীমার উপরে বুঝালে ‘on’ এবং সীমার বাইরে বুঝালে ‘to’ ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ

Dinajpur is in the north of Bangladesh.

The Garo Hills are in the north of Bangladesh.

The Himalayas are to the north of Bangladesh.

 

যে সব Verb এর পর Preposition বসে না - 

 

➥ Reach, resemble, violate, discuss, resign, sign, investigate, recommend, order, command, enter, ইত্যাদি Verb গুলো Transitive verb হওয়ায় এদের পরে কোন Preposition বসে না, সরাসরি Object বসে। যেমনঃ

Incorrect: We reached at the station.

Correct: We reached the station.

Incorrect: We discussed on/about the matter.

Correct: We discussed the matter.

 

➥ Adverb এবং Adverb phrase এর আগে Preposition বসে না। যেমনঃ

Incorrect: She tried with heart and soul (মনে প্রাণে)

Correct: She tried heart and soul

 

➥ Preposition বা Prepositional phrase এর পর Noun, Noun Phrase বসে এবং Verb থাকলে তার সাথে ‘ing’ যুক্ত হয়। যেমনঃ

Incorrect: It is needed for safety.

Correct: It is needed for safety.

Incorrect: We played instead of working.

Correct: We played instead of working.
