A Man is Known by the Company He Keeps: Man is a social being. He wants persons
with whom he can mix and converse freely. Exchanging thoughts, ideas, hopes,
fears, etc. But friends whose tastes and inclinations are different from
ours cannot give us the delight that we expect from them. So a man naturally
seeks the society of those who are like himself in their taste and inclination.
We can, therefore, very easily say what sort a man is from the nature and
character of his friends. Moreover, friends exert a significant influence on our
character. If we mix with the bad, we shall get their bad habits and gradually
become bad ourselves. If, on the other hand, we integrate with the good and the
noble, it will ennoble us too. Our character can thus be judged from that of
our companions. Therefore, if we want to be good and noble in life, we should
carefully avoid evil company. If we take to evil ways, a true companion will
try to correct us. Thus it is well said that a man is known by the
company he keeps.

চায় যাদের সাথে মিশতে পারে ও স্বাধীনভাবে কথা বলতে পারে, ভাব, ধারণা, আশা-আকাঙ্ক্ষা,
ভয় প্রভৃতির আদানপ্রদান ঘটাতে পারে। কিন্তু যেসব বন্ধুর রুচি-ইচ্ছা আমাদের চেয়ে ভিন্ন
তারা আমাদের তেমন আনন্দ দিতে পারে না যেমনটি আমরা তাদের কাছে প্রত্যাশা করি। স্বভাবতই
মানুষ সমাজে সে সমস্ত লোক চায় যাদের সাথে তার নিজের ইচ্ছা-রুচির মিলন ঘটবে। অতএব আমরা
সহজেই একজন ব্যাক্তির বন্ধুবান্ধবের আচার-ব্যবহার ও চরিত্র থেকেই ব্যক্তিটি কেমন তা
বুঝতে পারি। অধিকিন্তু, আমাদের প্রত্যেকের মনেই বন্ধুদের আচরণ প্রভাব বিস্তার করে।
যদি আমরা মন্দদের সাথে মেলামেশা করি তাহলে আমরা মন্দ অভ্যাসগুলো অর্জন করবো এবং ক্রমান্বয়ে
মন্দ স্বভাবের হব। অন্যদিকে, ভালো ও মহৎদের সাথে মিশলে নিজেকেও মহৎ করে তুলতে পারবো।
তাই কারো চরিত্রকে বিচার করতে হলে তার সাথীদেরকে জানতে হবে। জীবনে সৎ ও মহৎ হতে হলে
কুসঙ্গ ত্যাগ করতে হবে। আমরা যদি খারাপ পথে পা বাড়াই তবে একজন সত্যিকারের বন্ধু প্রাণপণ
চেষ্টা করবে আমাদেরকে ভালো পথে ফিরিয়ে আনতে। তাই বলা হয় যে, একজন লোককে তার সঙ্গীসাথীদের
দ্বারাই চেনা যায়।
