Better to Reign in Hell Than Serve in Heaven: The inner meaning of the expression
helps us to perceive the value of freedom. Everybody wants freedom but when
someone gets all the needs of life serving others he forgets the taste of
freedom. He gradually turns into the slave of his boss or master. He doesn’t
think of his freedom at that time instead thinks of the facilities given by his
master. He is then used as a puppet. He cannot do anything according to his
will. On the contrary, a man who lives a free life getting fewer facilities of
life is happier than the subservient rich one. In this context, we can refer to
the poem “The Happiness of Freedom” written by Rajanikant Sen. In the poem the
poet compared the life of a sparrow that lives in a brick-built house and
thus saves itself from the sun, and rain and storm and the life of a tailor bird
that lives in his own made house facing the sun, rain, and storm. When the
sparrow talks of its facilities in the building and the sufferings of the
tailor bird in its nest, the tailor bird replies that it suffers in its own
house. It is her pride that she lives in her own house. But the sparrow lives in
another’s house and the owner of the house may get her out anytime. So it is
better to live free getting some pain than to live comfortably depending on
others’ mercy.

আমাদের স্বাধীনতার মূল্য অনুধাবনে সাহায্য করে। সবাই স্বাধীনতা চায় কিন্তু যখন কেউ
অন্যের অধীনে কাজ করে জীবনের সব প্রয়োজন মেটাতে পারে, সে তখন স্বাধীনতার স্বাদ ভুলে
যায়। এভাবে সে পর্যায়ক্রমে তার চাকরিদাতার গোলামে পরিণত হয়। সে তখন আর স্বাধীনতার কথা
চিন্তা করে না বরং তার মালিক কর্তৃক প্রদত্ত সুবিধার কথা চিন্তা করে। সে তখন তার মালিকের
হাতের পুতুলের ন্যায় ব্যবহৃত হয়। সে তখন নিজের ইচ্ছায় আর কিছু করতে পারে না। পক্ষান্তরে
যে ব্যক্তি কম সুবিধা ভোগ করেও স্বাধীন সে ধনি পরাধীন অন্য যে কারো চেয়ে সুখী জীবনযাপন
করে। এই প্রসঙ্গে আমরা রজনীকান্ত সেনের “স্বাধীনতার সুখ” কবিতার কথা উল্লেখ করতে পারি।
এই কবিতায় কবি চড়ুই পাখি ও বাবুইয়ের জীবনপ্রণালির তুলনামূলক চিত্র এঁকেছেন – চড়ুইপাখির
পাকা দালানে বাস এবং সে রোদ, বৃষ্টি ও ঝড় হতে মুক্ত এবং অন্যদিকে বাবুই তার নিজের তৈরি
বাড়িতে রোদ, বৃষ্টি ও ঝড়ের কষ্ট মোকাবিলা করে বাস করে। চড়ুই পাখি যখন তার সুবিধার কথা
এবং বাবুইয়ের কষ্টের কথা বলে তখন বাবুই জবাব দেয়, সে তার নিজের বাসায় বাস করে কষ্ট
পায়। এটা তার গর্ব যে সে তার নিজের বাসায় বাস করে। কিন্তু চড়ুই অন্যের বাড়িতে থাকে
এবং বাড়ীওয়ালা যে কোনো সময় তাকে বের করে দিতে পারে। সুতরাং কষ্ট সহ্য করে স্বাধীনভাবে
বাস করা, অন্যের উপর নির্ভর করে আয়েশে বাস করার চেয়ে অধিকতর শ্রেয়।
