He Who Follows Two Hares Catches Neither: This pithy-saying contains a great
truth. On the surface, it means that if a man wants to catch a hare he should
give full attention to it and empty all his might in this behalf because the
hare will not offer itself to the caught and killed. Rather it will try its
level best to escape life. If he attempts to catch two hares at the same
time he will have to divide his attention and efforts between the two and in
such half-hearted hunting he is bound to fail in securing his prey as they
will try with might to flee away from death. This means his total loss
whereas he could have gained one if he had tried for the one only. Through this
similitude of hare-hunting the internal meaning reveals itself. It awakens
people’s thoughts and prompts them to analyze the strategy adopted by them
toward the realization of their objectives. In order to achieve one’s objectives
one has to take up only one at one time. Then he should engage all his
energies and efforts with undivided attention to reach that goal. This is the
prudent way to seek success in life. If, on the other hand, he moves behind two
objectives at the same time, he may not succeed in getting either because of
divided attention and distributed efforts. In such a situation he may be left
with only a complete failure. Wisdom teaches that success comes one after
another and man should proceed step by step. If he moves about in more than one
sphere of his objectives at the same time he will never be in a position to
hit his target accurately, and ultimately he will come to frustration and
grief.

একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সত্য নিহিত হয়েছে। দৃশ্যত এর অর্থ হচ্ছে, কোনো ব্যক্তি যদি একটি
খরগোশ ধরতে চায় তবে এর প্রতি তার পূর্ণ মনোযোগ এবং সার্বিক শক্তি নিয়োজিত করতে হবে।
কারণ, খরগোশটি ধৃত ও নিহিত হওয়ার জন্য নিজেকে তার হাতে স্বেচ্ছায় সমর্পন করবে না। সেও
নিজের প্রাণটা বাঁচিয়ে পালিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য যথাসাধ্য চেষ্টা করবে। একই সঙ্গে যদি সে দুটি খরগোশ ধরতে চায় তাহলে তার
মনযোগ ও প্রচেষ্টাকে দু’দিকে সম্প্রসারিত করতে হবে এবং অর্ধ-মনযোগী শিকার-উদ্যোগে শিকারগুলোকে
কুক্ষিগত করতে সে নিশ্চিতরূপেই ব্যর্থ হবে। কারণ, শিকারগুলোও মৃত্যুর কবল থেকে রক্ষা
পাওয়ার জন্য প্রাণপণ চেষ্টা করে প্রাণ নিয়ে পালিয়ে যাবে। এর অর্থ হবে তার সার্বিক ক্ষতি;
কেননা, সে যদি একটা খরগোশ ধরার জন্য সর্বাত্মক চেষ্টা করত তাহলে অন্তত সেই একটারই অধিকারী
সে হতে পারত। খরগোশ শিকারের দ্যোতনার ভেতর দিয়েই প্রবচনটির অন্তর্নিহিত তাৎপর্য স্বতঃপ্রকাশমান।
এটা মানুষের চিন্তাকে জাগ্রত করে এবং নিজ উদ্দেশ্যই সফল করার জন্য সে যে কৌশল অবলম্বন
করেছে তা বিশ্লেষণ করে দেখতে তাকে উদ্ধুদ্ধ করে। উদ্দেশ্যগুলোকে বাস্তবায়িত করার জন্য
একবারে একটি উদ্দেশ্য তার নির্ধারণ করা উচিত এবং লক্ষ্যস্থলে পৌঁছার জন্য অখন্ড মনোযোগ
দিয়ে এর প্রতি সার্বিক শক্তি এবং প্রচেষ্টা নিবদ্ধ করা উচিত। জীবনে সাফল্য অর্জনের
উদ্যোগে এটাই বিচক্ষণ পন্থা। পক্ষান্তরে সে যদি একবারে একই সঙ্গে দুটি উদ্দেশ্যের পেছনে
ছোটে, তাহলে খন্ডিত মনোযোগে এবং বিভক্ত প্রচেষ্টার কারণে উভয়ক্ষেত্রেই সাফল্য অর্জনের
সে ব্যর্থ হতে পারে। এই অবস্থায় সামগ্রিক ব্যর্থতাই হবে তার প্রাপ্তি। প্রজ্ঞা মানুষকে
এই শিক্ষা দেয় যে, জীবনে সাফল্য একটি একটি করেই আসে এবং মানুষের উচিত একটির পর একটি
পদক্ষেপ দিয়ে অগ্রসর হওয়া। মানুষ যদি একই সঙ্গে তার উদ্দেশ্যগুলোর একাধিক ক্ষেত্রে
বিচরণ করে তাহলে কখনো সে তার লক্ষ্যস্থলে সঠিকভাবে আঘাত হানতে পারবে না – পরিণামে সে
হতাশা ও দুর্ভোগে নিমজ্জিত হবে।
