The computer is one of the most
important and valuable inventions of the 20th century. There is no
doubt that it is a boon to human civilization. Now it has become an inseparable
part of modern life. The computer is an electronic device that performs
mathematical calculations, stores a lot of information, and supplies them in
times of need. Charles Babbage was the first inventor of the computer. Then
Professor Howard Aiken gave it a revised and modernized shape. Now it performs
complicated problems, diagnoses diseases, performs complicated medical
operations, runs businesses, and so on. The computer is now widely used in
industries. Every literate person should have a basic knowledge of computers.
Electronic computers are of two basic types analogue and digital. The analogue
computer measures, while the digital computers count. Computers can be classified
according to their functions: (a) Special purpose computers and (b) General
purpose computers. The computer is now used almost in all sectors of life. It is
widely used in the field of space administration, telecommunication, air
traffic control, and navigation of ships. In fact, the computer is doing a great job
by substituting the human brain and preventing the misuse of time and energy.
