Essay Eve Teasing (নারী উত্যক্তকরণ)
Introduction: Eve-teasing has now
become a regular occurrence in the lives of girls and women in Bangladesh. It is
a term that usually involves Youngman annoying or disquieting (অশান্তিকর)
girls or women by making sexual innuendos (কু-ইঙ্গিত) against them in public or
workplaces. The term Eve-teasing is found to substitute the erotic term sexual
harassment. Eve is believed to be the first woman created by the Almighty and
all women are the descendants of her and thus generically could be called Eve.
Causes of Eve-teasing: The main reason behind the increasing number
of cases of Eve-teasing is the degradation of our cultural outlook toward females.
The morale and mentality of the young people have changed. Our education has no
moral sin, our religious exercises become ritualistic (আচার), and society is
becoming more materialistic (জড়বাদী / প্রকৃতিবাদী) and our politics is not
bound by ethics.
The present condition of Eve-teasing in
Bangladesh: Eve-teasing is rising in number, recklessness, and ferocity. Parents
and guardians are passing days in great anxiety for the safety and well-being of
the young women under their charge. Civilized life and living in the country are
being challenged by the depraved and brutal behaviour of Eve-teasers. Apart from
suicide, one statistic has revealed that during the January-July 2010 period only,
about 13,000 women were victims of Eve-teasing of different forms across the
country. This figure counted only the
reported case. Many occurrences remain unreported as the majority of the victims
of eve-teasing prefer to ignore this fear or not to be disgraced or part of social gossip.
Impact of Eve-teasing: As nearly half
of the population of the country are women, their participation in employment
is a must for the economic development of the country. Eve-teasing hinders
women from participating in the formal employment sector. Girls who are teased or
harassed are also pushed into marriage before they are physically or mentally
prepared. Eve-teasing also increases girls’ dropout rate from school. Parents concerned
about their daughter’s honour of safety, sometimes keep their daughters home
and or marry them off at early age.
Difficulties
of facing this problem: More often the incident of Eve-teasing is blamed on the
victim i.e. women. It is as if males have got the license to indulge in any sort
of lecherous behavior and can go away with it. There have been a lot of
instances when women have come out in the open to share their experiences. Different
newspapers and websites keep publishing such accounts that reflect feelings of disgust,
insult, and scene experienced by women.
Ways to get rid of this problem: To
stop the menace tougher legislation is needed and it should be properly
implemented. Recently, the government is planning to introduce a strict law against
eve-teasing. This is the time to move forward. These steps will only be successful
when our attitude towards women is changed. The attitude of the male must be
changed if this menace is too eradicated. A general respect for the female
will go a long way in building a healthy society.
Conclusion: Eve-teasing is increasing at
a very alarming rate in our country. We need to take the necessary steps to prevent
eve-teasing from the root. We need to focus on the prevention of eve-teasing from
the family. If people are more aware of it and if we can make the people
believe that eve-teasing is a social crime, this rate will go down.
