Adjective Phrase এর পরিচয় –

Adjective Phrase এর সংজ্ঞাঃ কোনো Phrase বা শব্দসমষ্টি যখন Adjective এর কাজ করে তখন তাকে Adjective Phrase বলে। যেমন – Mr. Habib is a man of wealth.

উদাহরণ বিশ্লেষণঃ উপরিল্লোখিত বাক্যটিতে ‘of wealth’ শব্দসমষ্টি তার পূর্ববর্তী Noun ‘man’ কে বিশেষায়িত করেছে। কোনো Noun কে বিশেষায়িত করা মূলত Adjective এর কাজ। সুতরাং এই বাক্যে ‘of wealth’ শব্দসমষ্টি Adjective এর কাজ করেছে, তাই ‘of wealth’ Adjective Phrase।

 

Adjective Phrase এর গঠন –

⇘ Preposition + Adjective যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – A woman with black eyes, a clock of red colour, a boy of tender age, a man of wisdom, a man of noble birth, a face with a smile, a man without fear, a necklace of pearl, a road through the village, a woman with red lips, a man of parts ইত্যাদি।

 

⇘ Noun + Present Participle + Preposition + Object যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – Fishes swimming in the pond, boys playing in the field, girls plucking flowers in the garden, the child sleeping on the bed, the man walking along the road, birds flying in the sky ইত্যাদি।

 

⇘ Noun + Past Participle + Preposition + Object যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – The car made in Japan, the crops damaged by floods, passengers injured in an accident, a tree uprooted by the storm, a boy absorbed in study, the sky covered with clouds, students involved in politics ইত্যাদি।

 

⇘ As + Adjective + as + Noun যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – As white as milk, as soft as a feather, as clever as a jackle, as dull as an ass, as black as a crow ইত্যাদি।

 

⇘ Adjective + Infinitive যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – Difficult to do, able to walk, easy to learn, beautiful to look at, sour to taste, ready to do, eager to learn ইত্যাদি।

 

⇘ Noun + Infinitive + Object/ Adverb যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – A pen to write with, time to return, attempt to murder, a house to live in, desire to succeed, a flute to play on, a book to read, a chair to sit on, a knife to sharpen, a pair of shoe to mend ইত্যাদি।

নোটঃ উল্লেখ্য infinitive এর পূর্বে Noun/Adjective থাকলে তা Adjective Phrase হয়। আর infinitive এর পূর্বে Noun/Adjective না থাকলে তা Noun Pharse।

 

⇘ Adjective + and/or/but + Adjective অর্থাৎ দুইটি Adjective – and, or, but দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়ে Adjective Phrase গঠন করে। যেমন – High and low, rich or poor, more or less, lame or lazy, slow but sure, the long and short, short and sweet, null and void, good or bad, slow and steady, right and wrong, right and left, past and present, by fair means or foul, holy and happy, ancient and modern, rough and ready, bright or dark ইত্যাদি।

 

⇘ Adjective + Preposition + Object যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – Blind of one eye, second to none, good in English, weak in Math, careful of danger, out of mind, full of courage, busy for nothing, out of fashion, out of sight, dull of hearing ইত্যাদি।

 

⇘ Noun/Adjective + Present Participle / Past Participle + Noun যোগে Adjective Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – a close-fisted man, a money-obsessed society, a cold-blooded murder, a double-tongued man, a bed-ridden patient, a fortunate-hunting man, a light-fingered person, a gentle-flowing river, a left-handed compliment, a time honoured custom, a God fearing person, an absent-minded boy, an able-bodied person ইত্যাদি।
