Vision 2021
Introduction: ‘Vision 2021’ has become
a buzzword in the mass media, government, and non-government offices, markets
and shopping malls, and even in public vehicles. It is a set of election
promises, work schedules, and declarations that the Awami League placed before the
nation. Vision 2021 indicates the range of things visualized with the help of
the power of looking ahead up to the year 2021, making a proper plan about them, and implementing the plan into reality.
Vision 2021: The present government of Bangladesh
came to power in December 2008 declaring some visions in the light of
Vision 2021 that will solve most of our national crises involving corruption, unemployment,
illiteracy, poverty, and price hikes. The set of election promises and plans in
the name of Vision 2021 are as follows:
2010: 100 percent student enrolment at
primary level.
2011: Supply of pure drinking water for
the entire population.
2012: Self-sufficiency in food.
2013: Bringing each house under hygienic
sanitation, attaining an 8% annual growth rate and generating 7000 Megawatt of
electricity that will be increased to 8000 Megawatt in 2015.
2014: Attaining full literacy.
2015: Living accommodation for the
entire population.
2021: Reducing unemployment to 15
percent against the percent rate of 40%, ensuring standard nutritional food for
85% of the population, eliminating all kinds of contagious diseases, increasing
longevity to 70 years, reducing infant mortality rate to 15 from 54 per
thousand at present, reducing maternal death rate to 15% from 38% increasing
use of birth control methods to 80%.
Vision 2021 is a dream, a commitment to
freeing Bangladesh from its current state of crisis and building a country
whose citizens are able to live prosperous and happy lives. The year 2021 will
mark the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence. It is a vision of
ensuring a democratic system where people choose their government freely and
get services from it without hassle, enjoy freedom from fear and intolerance,
live with dignity, where every citizen is assured of social justice,
environmental protection, human rights, and equal opportunities, and where the
rule of law and good governance flourish.
By 2020/2021 Bangladesh will be a
middle-income country where poverty will be drastically reduced, the citizens
will be able to meet every basic need, and where development will be no first
track, with ever-increasing rates of growth.
Five priority issues: In the context of
problems the country is facing new as well as the existing politico-socio-economic
crisis. Five subjects have been given priority, these are:
- Maintenance of economic stability and control over commodity price hikes.
- Effective action against corruption.
- Power and energy sector.
- Elimination of poverty and inequity.
- Establishment of good governance.
Conclusion: The successful
implementation of this work programme and vision for 2021 depends on the active
participation and involvement of the entire nation. We hope that the government
will take all possible steps to materialize the vision of 2021 and all the
citizens will be sincere in participating in the great endeavor of national
reconstruction and building a future for themselves as well as successive
generations.
