প্রিয় ভিউয়ারস, আশা করি ভালো আছেন। আমিও আল্লাহর রহমতে ভালো আছি। একটি সঠিক বাক্য তৈরি করার জন্য Subject – Verb এর সমন্বয় করা অপরিহার্য। সাধারণত Subject এর Person ও Number অনুযায়ী Vebr বা ক্রিয়া বসে। Subject এর Singular ও Plural অনুযায়ী Verb ও Singular ও Plural বসে। আর এটাকে Subject-Verb Agreement বলে। Subject-Verb Agreement ছাড়া কখনও বাক্য শুদ্ধ হয় না। তাই Subject-Verb Agreement সম্পর্কে জ্ঞান রাখা জরুরী। আজকের ব্লগে আপনাদের মাঝে Subject-Verb Agreement এর ব্যবহার নিয়ে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা শেয়ার করবো। আশা করি আপনারা উপকৃত হবেন তাহলে শুরু করা যাক।

Subject-Verb Agreement এর গঠনপ্রণালী –

Rule 1 – দুই বা ততোধিক Singular Subject যদি ‘and’ দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তবে verb এর Plural number হবে। যেমন –

Q: He and I (be) friends.

A: He and I are friends.

Rule 2 – And দ্বারা যুক্ত Subject গুলো যদি একটি অর্থ বা ধারণা বুঝায় কিংবা সমষ্টিগত একটি অর্থ বুঝায় তাহলে Verb singular হবে। যেমন –

Q: Slow and steady (win) the race.

A: Slow and steady wins the race.

Q: Bread and butter (be) my favourite breakfast.

A: Bread and butter is my favourite breakfast.

Rule 3: And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই বা দুইয়ের অধিক Singular Noun যদি একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু নির্দেশ করে তাহলে Verb টি Singular হবে। যেমন –

Q: The principal and chairman (be) present at the meeting.

A: The principal and chairman was present at the meeting.

Note: And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুই বা দুইয়ের অধিক Singular Noun যদি ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু বুঝালে তাহলে Verb টি Plural হবে। যেমন –

Q: The principal and chairman (be) present at the meeting.

A: The principal and chairman were present at the meeting.

Rule 4 – দুইটি Subject যদি as well as, along with, together with ইত্যাদি Conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তবে প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী Verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: Maha as well as her sisters (sing) well.

A: Maha as well as her sisters sings well.

Rule 5 – দেশ ও পুস্তকের নাম Plural number থাকলেও এগুলোর পরে Singular verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: ‘Treasure Island’ (be) an interesting book.

A: ‘Treasure Island’ is an interesting book.

Rule 6 – Plural subject যদি নির্দিষ্ট পরিমাণ বা সংখ্যা বুঝায় তাহলে Singular verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: Fifty miles (be) a good distance.

A: Fifty miles is a good distance.

Q: Sixty thousand taka (be) a good sum.

A: Sixty thousand taka is a good sum.

Rule 7 – And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুইটি Singular subject এর পূর্ব যদি every, each বা no words থাকে, তাহলে Verb singular হয়। যেমন –

Q: Each boy and each girl (be) given prizes.

A: Each boy and each girl was given prizes.

Q: No friend and no relative (care) for me.

A: No friend and no relative cares for me.

Rule 8 – And দ্বারা যুক্ত দুইটি Subject এর একটি Positive ও অপরটি Negative হলে, প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: You and not Habib (to have) done this.

A: You and not Habib have done this.

Q: Maha and not I (be) to blame.

A: Maha and not I is to blame.

Rule 9 – Each, either, neither যদি Subject এর পূর্বে বসে তাহলে Verb singular হয়। যেমন –

Q: Each of the boys (be) present.

A: Each of the boys was present.

Q: Either of them (be) guilty.

A: Either of them is guilty.

Q: Neither of the girls (be) pretty.

A: Neither of the girls is pretty.

Rule 10 – দুই বা ততোধিক Subject যদি or বা nor, either……or, neither…..nor দ্বারা যুক্ত থাকে, তাহলে Singular verb হয়। যেমন –

Q: Either you or he (be) absent.

A: Either you or he was absent.

Q: Neither he nor his son (be) present here.

A: Neither he nor his son was present here.

Rule 11 – Either…….or ও Neither…….nor দ্বারা যুক্ত দুইটি Subject এর মধ্যে যদি Plural subject থাকে, তবে তা পরে বসবে এবং verb টিও plural হবে। যেমন –

Q: Neither the moon nor the stars (be) visible.

A: Neither the moon nor the stars were visible.

Q: Either he or his sons (to have) done this.

A: Either he or his sons have done this.

Rule 12 – Artillery, Aristocracy, Gentry, Cattle, Mankind, Public, Peasantry, Poultry, People, Vermin প্রভৃত দেখতে singular হলেও Plural verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: Cattle (be) grazing in the field.

A: Cattle are grazing in the field.

Q: Mankind (be) faced with danger.

A: Mankind are faced with danger.

Rule 13 – Gallows, Mathematics, Politics, Physics, News, Wages ইত্যাদি দেখতে Plural মনে হলেও এগুলোর পরে Singular verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: The news (be) bad.

A: The news is bad.

Q: The wages of sin (be) death.

A: The wages of sin is death.

Rule 14 – Adjective যদি Subject হয় এবং সেই Adjective দ্বারা কোনো শ্রেণির সকলকে বুঝায়, তাহলে Verb plural হয়। যেমন –

Q: The rich (be) not always happy.

A: The rich are not always happy.

Rule 15 – Relative Pronoun এ antecedent অনুযায়ী Verb বসে। অর্থাৎ who/which এর পূর্বে যে Noun বা Pronoun থাকবে সে অনুযায়ী verb বসবে। যেমন –

Q: It is I who (be) to blame.

A: It is I who am to blame.

Note: Relative Pronoun পূর্বোল্লিখিত যে Noun বা Pronoun কে নির্দেশ করে তাকে “Antecedent” বলে। আর “Antecedent” এর অর্থ হচ্ছে ‘পূর্বে গমণ করেছে এমন’

Rule 16 – One of এর পর Plural noun থাকলেও Singular verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: One of the boys (be) my friend.

A: One of the boys is my friend.

Rule 17 – Committee, Council, Commission, Board, Government, Parliament, Jury ইত্যাদি Collective noun এর পর Singular verb বসে। যেমন –

Q: The committee (to have) elected its Chairman.

A: The committee has elected its Chairman.

Rule 18 – Subject এর পূর্বে Many a উল্লেখ থাকলে Verb singular হবে। যেমন –

Q: Many a boy (ruin) his career through laziness.

A: Many a boy ruins his career through laziness.

Rule 19 – একটি Sentence এ Subject অনুযায়ী Verb বসে। Subject যে Number ও Person হবে Verb ও ঠিক সেই Number ও Person হবে। যেমন –

Q: The colour of the flowers (be) charming.

A: The colour of the flowers is charming.

Note: ‘The colour’ Subject টি Singular number হওয়াতে Verb-ও Singular ‘is’ হয়েছে।

 

Rule 20 – With a view to ও look forward to এর পর verb এর সাথে ing যোগ হয়। যেমন –

Q: I look forward to (hear) from you.

A: I look forward to hearing from you.
