National ID Card Paragraph
ID card or identity means a card with a person’s name, date of birth, address, photograph, etc. on it that proves who he is. Since it is issued by the nation, it is called a national ID card. In every independent nation, its citizen has a national ID card. We, as an independent nation, should have a national ID card after we have our freedom. But we had to wait for a long 36 years to have our national ID cards. In our country, a national ID card is issued with the purpose of ensuring a fair election. The election commission on behalf of the government has issued the national ID card for every citizen. It is also called a voter ID card. Any permanent citizen not below the age of 18 years is eligible to have a national ID card. Under the UNDP project in collaboration with Bangladesh Army, the election commission launched a massive programme to prepare the voter list with photographs with a view to holding free fair, and credible elections. Nine major development partners through a UNDP project provided financial support to this issue. The project includes funding the ICT equipment like laptops, webcams, and fingerprint scanners, required for completing the nationwide digital voter registration. This gigantic effort of the election commission has come true, though initially, it raised a big question in the minds of the countrymen whether the voter list would be completed within the scheduled time. The full cooperation of the Bangladesh Army and the people’s participation in the process of the new voter list has helped the Election Commission complete it in time. This photo attached to the voter ID card works as a national ID card for every voter. This national ID card will serve twenty-two types of advantages including land purchase, bank loan, passport, etc. There were some limitations and irregularities at the initial stage of introducing a national ID card. Eventually, the irregularities have been minimized. So the election commission deserves our thanks for offering the nation a national ID card. Obviously, the introduction of a voter ID card or national ID card is a landmark in the history of Bangladesh.
