Make Hay While the Sun Shines or, Strike While the Iron is Hot (ঝোপ বুঝে কোপ মার)
The central meaning of the proverb is
that one should make the proper use of opportunity. Farmers have to turn their
hay over and over again in the sun till it is dry. As the sunshine is rare in
cold weather a farmer has to be very prompt and active when it comes. If he
misses one chance, he is not sure when the sun will appear again. The hay may
be spoilt altogether and then he will be in great difficulty about food for his
cattle and horse. The proverb thus means that we must not let any opportunity
slip, but make prompt and full use of it whenever it comes. Our life is
uncertain. Who knows what may happen to us even tomorrow? We may be quite hale today, but tomorrow we may be ill. So if we miss an opportunity today in
expectation of making use of it tomorrow, we may not be able to avail ourselves
of it at all. Moreover, opportunities do not always come. If we miss one
opportunity we may miss it forever and we have to suffer.

এই যে, আমাদের সর্বদা সুযোগের সদ্বব্যবহার করা উচিত। কৃষককে তার খড় যতক্ষণ পর্যন্ত
না শুকায় ততক্ষণ বার বার উল্টিয়ে পাল্টিয়ে দিতে হবে। সূর্যতাপ শীতের ঋতুতে খুবই কম,
তাই রোদ্রের সময় কৃষককে তার কাজ দ্রুতগতিতে সম্পন্ন করতে হবে। কেননা যদি সে তা না করে
তবে সে নিশ্চিত নয় সে আর তাপ পাবে কি না। এতে করে খড়গুলো নষ্ট হয়ে যাবে এবং গরুবাছুরের
খাবারের সমস্যা দেখা দেবে। অতএব এ প্রবাদটিতে বলা হয়েছে আমরা যেন সুযোগ হাতছাড়া না
করি। আমাদেরকে সুযোগ আসলেই কাজে লাগাতে হবে। আমাদের জীবন অনিশ্চিত। আগামীকাল কি হবে
তা আমরা জানি না। আজ আমরা হাসিখুশি থাকতে পারি কিন্তু আগামীকালই অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়তে পারি।
তাই আগামী দিনের আশায় যদি আজকের সুযোগটি হাতছাড়া করি তবে হয়তো সে কাজটা করা কোনোদিনই
সম্ভব হবে না। অধিকিন্তু সুযোগ সর্বদা আসে না। যদি আমরা একটি সুযোগ নষ্ট করি তবে হয়তো
তা আর কোনোদিনই আসবে না এবং এজন্য আমাদেরকে দুর্ভোগ পোহাতে হবে।
