Give Everyman the Ear But Few the Voice: This is the advice that Polonius
gives to his young son when sending him abroad to study. It is a valuable
piece of worldly wisdom. A man should hear more than he talks. When other people
confide in him or give their opinion on men and things he may listen trying to
profit as best as he can. But he should not open his own lips and thus he would
be able to understand the nature of a man from his conversation and he may get
some important information from it. In our society, we see that learned and
wise people talk less. They are valued by other people because people consider
their speech valuable and important. But those who talk more than their need
are considered to be talkative. Nobody wants to hear their speech and people
often avoid them. Those who are in the habit of talking sometimes
unconsciously disclose many private or secret matters that make them foolish or
ashamed. So everybody should give up the habit of talking as it degrades
our position.

তত্ত্ব কথা। একজন লোকের কথা বেশি বলার চেয়ে তার বেশি শ্রবণ করা উচিত। যখন অন্য লোকজন
তার সাথে কথা বলে বা অন্য লোকজন সম্বন্ধে তার অভিমত ব্যক্ত করে, লাভবান হবার জন্য তার
তা শ্রবণ করা উচিত। কিন্তু তার নিজের মুখ খোলা উচিত নয় এবং এতে সে কথাবার্তায় অংশগ্রহণকারী
লোকের প্রকৃতি অনুধাবন করতে পারে এবং তা থেকে অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ তথ্য পেতে পারে। আমাদের
সমাজে আমরা দেখতে পাই জ্ঞানী ও শিক্ষিত ব্যক্তিরা কম কথা বলেন। তারা অন্য লোকদের দ্বারা
মুল্যায়িত হয় কারণ লোকজন তাদের কথাকে মূল্যবান ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মনে করে। কিন্তু যারা
প্রয়োজনের অতিরিক্ত কথা বলে তারা বাচাল হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয়। কেউ তাদের কথা শুনতে চায়
না এবং প্রায়ই তাদের এড়িয়ে চলে। বেশি কথা বলায় অভ্যস্ত লোকজন অবচেতন মনে তাদের ব্যক্তিগত
অথবা গোপন কথা বলে বোকা ও লজ্জিত হয়। তাই সকলের বেশি কথা বলার অভ্যাস ত্যাগ করা উচিত
যেহেতু এটি আমাদের সম্মানহানী করে।
