The saying means that the work that you
can do today should not be put off for tomorrow. We often put off our duties in
the hope of better days and better opportunities in the future. But we should
not forget that every moment of our life on earth has its particular duty.
Procrastination, therefore, means delaying doing something that is making our
task heavier and more difficult in the future. Besides, who can say what this
future will be whether it will not be worse than the present? Some unforeseen
obstacles may arise: we may suddenly be taken ill; there may be some family calamity;
financial misfortune etc. then we shall find that the task has become harder, if
not too hard. Moreover, if we once begin to put off work, it will soon grow into
the habit of indolence and will thus slowly bring about our own ruin. So it is
well said that procrastination is the thief of time.
বাংলা অনুবাদঃ প্রবাদটিতে বলা হয়েছে যে, যে
কাজ আজ করা যাবে তা আগামী দিনের জন্য ফেলে রাখা উচিত নয়। প্রায়ই আমরা আমাদের কর্তব্য
ফেলে রাখি ভবিষ্যতের ভালো দিন ও সুযোগের অপেক্ষায়। কিন্তু আমাদের ভুলে যাওয়া উচিত নয়
যে, জীবনের প্রতিটি মুহূর্তেই দায়িত্ব রয়েছে। দীর্ঘসূত্রতা তাই আমাদের কাজকে আরও কঠিন
করে তোলে। তাছাড়া কে বলতে পারে যে ভবিষ্যতের দিনগুলো আজকের চেয়ে খারাপ হবে না? কিছু
অনাকাঙ্ক্ষিত বাধা চলে আসতে পারে; যেমন – অসুস্থতা, পারিবারিক বা আর্থিক সমস্যা ইত্যাদি।
তখন আমাদের পক্ষে কাজটি আরও কঠিন হয়ে পড়বে। অধিকন্তু একবার যদি কাজ ফেলে রাখতে শুরু
করি তবে এ অভ্যাস দিন দিন বেড়ে চলবে এবং তা ধীরে ধীরে আমাদের ধ্বংসের পঠে ঠেলে দিবে।
তাই বলা হয় যে, দীর্ঘসূত্রতা সময় অপহরক।
