signifies a mother. Thus the proverb focuses on the importance of the role of a
mother in rearing up her children. Childhood is the most significant period of
one’s life. During this period the mind remains as soft as clay and it can be
moulded into any form. The training a child receives and the aptitudes or
qualities it develops during this period go a long way to shaping its future
life. And here comes the importance of the mother’s role. A child lives and
grows under the constant care and ministration of their mother. She is its guide,
guardian, philosopher, and nurse. Thus the mother plays the most significant role
in shaping its character and personality. Every mother should, therefore, be
very careful about her child’s training. She should invariably infuse into it
noble ideas and ideals and set excellent examples to emulate. All this will
lead the child to greatness. If it thus, achieves the qualities of greatness, it
will be in a position to shape the destiny of its nation and, eventually, to
rule the world at large. It is in this sense that the hand that rocks the

কাদামাটির মতো কোমল। এ সময় তাকে যে কোনো আকৃতিতে গড়ে তোলা যেতে পারে। এ সময় শিশু যে
প্রশিক্ষণ গ্রহণ করে এবং শিশুর মাঝে যেসব গুণ ও প্রবণতা দেখা যায় সেগুলোই বহুলাংশ তার
ভবিষ্যৎ নির্ধারণ করে। এখানেই আসে মায়ের ভূমিকার গুরুত্বের কথা। শিশুর জীবন গড়ে ওঠে
মায়ের সার্বক্ষণিক তত্ত্বাবধানে ও পরিচর্যার মাঝে। তিনি হচ্ছেন তার পথপদর্শক, অভিভাবক,
দার্শনিক এবং সেবিকা। অতএব তার চরিত্র ও ব্যক্তিত্ব বিকাশে তাঁর ভূমিকাই হচ্ছে সবচেয়ে
বেশি তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ। সুতরাং সন্তানের প্রশিক্ষণের ব্যাপারে প্রত্যেক মায়েরই অত্যন্ত
সতর্ক থাকা প্রয়োজন। সন্তানকে সর্বদা মহৎ ভাবধারায় এবং আদর্শে উদ্ধুদ্ধ করা এবং তার
সামনে অনুকরণযোগ্য চমৎকার দৃষ্টান্ত তুলে ধরাই মায়ের অন্যতম কর্তব্য। এগুলো তাঁর সন্তানকে
মহৎ গুণাবলির অধিকারী হতে সাহায্য করে। আর যে সন্তান মহৎ গুণাবলির অধিকারী হতে পারে,
তাকে সে সব গুণাবলি ভবিষ্যতে মহিমাময় আসনে সমাসীন হতে সক্ষম করে। ফলে, সে স্বীয় জাতির
ভাগ্যনিয়ন্তার আসন অধিকার করতে পারে এবং পরিশেষে সারা দুনিয়ায় নিজের প্রভাব-প্রতিপত্তি
প্রতিষ্ঠিত করতে সমর্থ হয়। যে হাত দোলনায় দোল দেয় সে হাতই যে জগৎ শাসন করে – একথাটির
তাৎপর্য এখানেই নিহিত।
