Noun Phrase এর পরিচয় –

Noun Phrase এর সংজ্ঞাঃ যে শব্দসমষ্টি বা Phrase, Noun এর কাজ করে তাকে Noun Phrase বলে।

Noun এর মতো কোনো Noun Phrase নিন্মলিখিত কাজগুলো করতে পারে –

👉 Finite Verb এর Subject হতে পারে। যেমন –

Birds of a feather flock together.

To find fault is easy.

Flesh and blood cannot bear with such an insult.

👉 Transitive Verb এর Object হতে পারে। যেমন –

He likes to play cricket.

The poor can hardly keep body and soul together.

👉 Verb of Incomplete Prediction এর Complement হতে পারে। যেমন –

Life is not a bed of roses.

The tiger is a beast of prey.

👉 Preposition এর Object হতে পারে। যেমন – He is proud of his men and money.

👉 Noun in Apposition রূপে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন – Maha, my best friend, always helps me.

 

Noun Phrase এর গঠণঃ Noun Phrase বিভিন্নভাবে গঠন হতে পারে। তাদের মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য কয়েকটি নিয়ম নিম্নে বর্ণনা করা হলো –

⇘ Noun ও তার পূর্বগামী Adjective (Adjective + Noun) নিয়ে Noun Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – A black sheep (কুলাঙ্গার), a burning question, broad daylight, the dark ages, a fair copy, a good deal, a narrow escape, a short cut, a going concern, a laughing stock ইত্যাদি।

⇘ Noun, পরবর্তী Preposition ও তার Object (Noun + Preposition + Object) নিয়ে Noun Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – An apple of discord (বিবাদের কারণ), a beast of burden (কলুর বলদ), a bolt from the blue (বিনা মেঘে বজ্রপাত), a fish out of water (), the gift of the gab (), the man in the street (), a man of parts (). ইত্যাদি।

⇘ Noun ও তার পূর্ববর্তী Possessive Noun (Possessive Noun + Noun) নিয়ে Noun Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – the baker’s dozen (তেরটি), a bird’s eye view, God’s acre (সমাধিক্ষেত্র), the lion’s share (সিংহভাগ), a mare’s nest (ঘোড়ার ডিম), penelope’s web, a spider web (মাকড়সার জাল), a stone’s throw ইত্যাদি।

⇘ And বা or দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি Noun সহযোগে নিয়ে Noun Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – Alpha and omega, bread and butter, day and night, din and bustle, flesh and blood, friend or foe, heaven and earth, kith and kin, light and shade, lock and key, manners and customs, men and money, merits and demerits, part and parcel, rack and ruin, rank and file, rhyme or reason, sum and substance, time and tide, ups and downs, why and wherefore ইত্যাদি।

⇘ দুটি Noun (যদি আগেরটি Adjective এর মতো পারেরটিকে বিশেষিত করে) পাশাপাশি বসে (Noun + Noun) নিয়ে Noun Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – A bosom friend, a country house, crocodiles tears, death bed, a certain lecture, fellow felling, a jail bird, a leap year, a maiden speech, train fare ইত্যাদি।

⇘ Noun Infinitive এর সাথে Adverbial অথবা Object বসে (Noun Infinitive + Adverbial / Object) নিয়ে Noun Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – To ride well, to win the prize. To swim is a good exercise. They tried to solve the problem. To top the list is his ambition.

⇘ Gerund এর সাথে Adverbial অথবা Object বসে (Gerund + Adverbial / Object) নিয়ে Noun Phrase গঠিত হয়। যেমন – Travelling in a hot dusty train gives me no pleasure. Why do you like visiting such a man?. Walking in the morning is good for health. He likes playing football. Maha enjoying reading poetry.
